Portsmouth Science Teacher Receives Presidental Award for Teaching

The RI Science and Technology Advisory Council would like to congratulate RI Science Education Leadership Council Member and Portsmouth science teacher Jeff Schoonover for receiving the 2009 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST).
The Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching is awarded annually to the best pre-college-level science and mathematics teachers across the country. This year President Obama named 103 teachers as recipients of this prestigious award. Each awardee will receive $10,000 from the National Science Foundation and will be honored at a White House ceremony later this year.
On May 6, 2010 the RI Science and Technology Advisory Council met with RI Commissioner of Education Deborah Gist and Dr. Jean Slattery, Senior Associate for Science at Achieve, Inc. to discuss the importance of improving education in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines and reiterate the value of strengthening workforce development throughout the state.
