RI NSF EPSCoR Announces Call for SURF Mentors

Published on November 17, 2009

RI NSF EPSCoR is currently soliciting mentor applications for the 2010 Rhode Island Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship program (RI SURF). The online application is available here. Please note that the deadline for mentor applications is January 8, 2010.

A RI SURF mentor for RI NSF EPSCoR will be responsible for overseeing an undergraduate Fellow in their lab for 10 weeks (May 24 - July 30 , 2010). During this time, the student will complete a formal research project and prepare a scientific poster. Fellows will also participate in career development activities and field trips. The RI SURF program will conclude with a statewide scientific poster conference (currently scheduled for July 30th, but subject to change). RI NSF EPSCoR will provide the students with a $3500 stipend and $500 for supplies. Mentors will be expected to participate in major SURF program events, including the end-of-the-program poster conference.

The research and project information mentors provide will be made available to students applying to the fellowship program. Mentors may be contacted regarding qualified applicants.

Please note:
1) Application deadline is January 8th, 2010
2) Due to the limited number of fellowships available, not all mentor applicants will be awarded a student Fellow.

If you are interested in adding your name to the pool of potential mentors, please fill out the online form by January 8th. Please also forward this information to other potentially interested PIs within Rhode Island.

If you have any questions regarding the SURF program or the mentor application please contact Jim Lemire, Coordinator for RI NSF EPSCoR Undergraduate Research at Roger Williams University.
